On Wednesday, Flavio posted a photo with Christopher Landau, deputy secretary of state and America’s second-highest diplomat.
Bolsonaro’s visit comes just two weeks after current president and Flavio’s political rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited Trump.
Flavio held a press conference shortly after meeting Trump in Washington and said he had asked the American leader to designate two of the country’s largest criminal groups, Commando Vermelho (CV) and Primero Commando da Capital (PCC), as “terrorist groups.”
“Today I had the honor of being received by President Donald Trump in the Oval Office of the White House. I arrived at 3 PM and left the building at 4:40 PM. First of all, I want to tell you that this meeting was not brokered by some shady businessman, but was arranged by the President of the United States himself,” he said.
The presidential candidate said the American leader received him with “tremendous politeness” and the first thing he did was ask about his father, his prison situation and how his family was “coping with the situation.” Last March, Elder Bolsonaro was placed under house arrest on charges of attempted coup and is in poor health as he is in and out of the hospital.
“While Lula came to the White House to lobby on behalf of drug traffickers, I ended up doing the exact opposite: I firmly called on President Trump to designate the PCC and Commando Vermelho as foreign terrorist organizations as soon as possible,” he said.
Flavio, Lula’s main opponent in opinion polls, inherited his father’s political role after he was convicted of attempting a coup in September 2025. The conviction prevented the family patriarch from running for public office.
Meanwhile, Flavio’s visit to Trump also comes amid a political and financial scandal surrounding the Banco Master, which may link him to the heir to Brazil’s right-wing political dynasty.
