Healthy Peppermint Mocha Recipe

Every time Christmas approaches I start fantasizing about peppermint mocha. I unapologetically enjoy all things coffee, but fancy coffee drinks can go a long way in breaking your budget (not to mention they’re loaded with sugar). Luckily, there’s an easy and delicious peppermint mocha recipe you can make at home using real, healthy ingredients.

Don’t miss the $7 Starbucks Peppermint Mocha!

Healthy Peppermint Mocha Recipe

In college, I often went to coffee shops to get my caffeine fix. Now that I’m older and hopefully wiser, I usually make my coffee at home using organic beans.

I don’t miss mainstream coffee shops at all because I can even make gourmet coffees like pumpkin spice or vanilla lattes at home. The taste is just as good as the original version, or better in my book. I love being able to use real food ingredients that fuel your brain and body.

I’m often asked, “How do you manage to do everything with a blog and all those kids?” The answer is that I don’t do everything myself, but I have a structured schedule and eat plenty of healthy fats. This recipe is packed with brain-boosting fats to keep you energized throughout the day but without making you anxious.

Peppermint Mocha Ingredients

Baristas at a popular coffee shop chain make their famous peppermint mocha coffee using espresso, peppermint syrup, and milk. I think I like this homemade version better. It may not taste exactly the same as Starbucks or other coffee shops, but I like it better.

If you prefer, you can add dairy-free almond milk, oat milk, or grass-fed milk to the recipe. But I’ve found that using healthy fats makes it super creamy and you don’t even need to add milk!

How to Make Peppermint Mocha at Home

I almost always add a tablespoon of butter, coconut oil, and/or MCT oil to my coffee. This is the perfect way to get healthy fats and added benefits.

I often use Four Sigmatic’s Mushroom Coffee for the added superfood benefits. It doesn’t taste like mushrooms, it just tastes like coffee, I promise! You can also add delicious Reishi Mushroom Hot Chocolate to this recipe.

I have made variations of this recipe with coffee, decaffeinated coffee, chai tea, and herbal tea. Everything is delicious! All you need is some brewed coffee, a few ingredients, and a blender to make your own peppermint mocha in just minutes.

A word of warning: If you are new to consuming coconut oil, start slowly. Coconut oil and MCT oil may cause short-term nausea if you are not used to it. Both have immune-boosting, metabolism-boosting, and yeast-fighting properties. But if you jump in too quickly, your boat may rebel!

Peppermint Mocha Recipe

Make your own peppermint mocha with brain-boosting healthy fats, antioxidant-rich cocoa powder, and a hint of mint.

  • Brew coffee.

  • While still hot, pour the coffee into a blender or large cup if using an immersion blender.

  • Add remaining ingredients and mix vigorously for 10 seconds until emulsified. If using peppermint stevia, omit the honey and peppermint extract/oil. This step is important because it creates a foamy and creamy taste instead of a greasy taste. No foam needed!

  • Drink and enjoy!

Wrapping up

I don’t always add toppings to my drinks, but some people like extra garnishes. If you want to make your holiday drinks a little fancier, try adding some decorations. When I need something fancy for my guests, I like to top them with crushed natural candy canes. Healthy white chocolate or dark chocolate curls also go well on top.

If desired, add a little grass-fed whipped cream or whipped coconut cream. Some homemade marshmallows are also a great topping option!

essential oil safety

This recipe calls for 1 drop of natural peppermint extract or peppermint essential oil. Peppermint extract is made by diluting the essential oil in alcohol, so either way you’re consuming plant oil. Some people prefer one form over the other.

There is concern that medicinal or supplemental doses of peppermint oil may reduce breast milk production. Pregnant women (especially in the first trimester) are advised to refrain from consuming essential oils. The amounts included in this recipe (especially when using peppermint extract) are minimal in terms of serving size and are generally considered safe for most people.

Total latte love

If you don’t like mint or want to skip peppermint, try this variation instead.
