Team Principal Andrea Stella said McLaren did not think that a one -stop strategy for the Grand Prix Lando Norris was possible before the race.
Norris blocked the Oscar Pia tree after intense battle to reduce the championship deficit to 9 points in the summer vacation of Formula 1.
The British driver was third, but fell to fourth place behind George Russell, and was already grabbed for the first time for the first time than the race leader Charles Lecrlerc and PiaStri.
Stella said, “Our standard strategy was a two -stop strategy.
“We didn’t have to think that one stop was possible, so Oscar went with Oscar’s two stops to pass the leclerc at the first stop, then we tried to expand the second stop to have a tire delta.
“With Lando, when we expanded, we didn’t think we would be able to one stop when we combined LANDO, but with a credit for Lando, he was convinced that the first stops began to enter the game as they had collected very powerful sectors and rap time with second -hand tires.
“We did not enter the race with one or two stops. We thought that two stops were a strategy.”
Norris continued the media up to almost half of the race, Lab 32. I was still led when the tire avoided falling from the cliff and was still beaten for hard.
“It lasts longer at the speed we did. I continued the media to 32 laps or something like the same.”
“It was not a terrible idea to work hard until the end.
“The tires get hot. It’s easy to make mistakes. The last few wheels, the rubber is probably quite low, so it’s too easy to fix the tire into one Shika line.
“I knew that tires could end very easily, but I had more ahead of others. At that point, I tried to go ahead of George and Charles. I still had no hope that I was fighting OSCAR until the end. So it was much better.”
NORRIS: I was banking for a safety vehicle
Norris says that the 9th career F1 victory on Sunday was the first to use alternative strategies, but in 2024, when he was running for a long time in his first odor in the Miami Grand Prix, he mentioned his virgin victory when he was in his hand.
He said that in Hungary, the idea of one -stop strategy was that he was lucky to take a safety car or virtual safety vehicle in a timely manner.
“(His engineer) When do you think about one stop? At that point, I think it’s 7 seconds from Oscar and 8 to 9 seconds behind Charles. “
“I didn’t think my race was over, but it was very slim to be able to fight at least in the perfect two -stop strategy, so my expectations were not high, but I could bring more banks for safety cars or VSCs.
“But I had nothing of them. After all, I don’t think it’s important. My confidence was not the highest, but it was the best opportunity to do something.
“It’s a little more tricky because it was actually able to fight until the end of the victory. I’m still not sure that it feels like the best strategy, but it has been quite good to think about how difficult it is to overtake.”
PiaStri questions the strategy with Hushi.
After the second pit, PiaStri closed 12 seconds from Norris, where 25 laps remained. Unlike Norris in the previous race of Belgium, he continued to take the chunks from the deficit without making an obvious error and caught him with six raps.
He saw one turn 1 after three raps remained, and threw the car in the first corner of the second rap and avoided contact with Norris, who left the room inside.
PiaStri said, “I was able to close the last rap again. It was possible to arrive within a sixth to seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -seven -more ways to get closer to that point,” PiaStri said.
“It’s always hard when I get closer, but you don’t want to have a chance to think if someone else never wakes up.
“I had to go for it, and you can say that you have waited for another rap, but I’m sure you wouldn’t have changed anything even if you waited once more.”
About his strategy he added:
“When you are behind the car, your risk compensation ratio is always very different. Always. Can we have matched Lando? That’s a question that I have no answer. So, that’s the only thing.”
As impressive as PiaStri’s driving, Norris had never made a mistake because it was so hard to finish Russell, where two drivers took third place for 21 seconds.
Norris said:
“I just tried not to make a mistake, and it was so easy to lock it because it was too easy when the tire was over.
“It was so easy to make a mistake, so I felt that I had to drive 100 %, and there were too many, too many, and 98 %, I think I’m under the limit and I can’t get anything from the car.
“So 99 %of the limit was too difficult, but I had to continue as long as possible.”
Brown: It’s as perfect as possible
MCLAREN’s Zak Brown chief executive said that his driver was freely racing the race and fourth in the season after the thrilling battle.
He said Sky Sports F1: “You’re not perfect in the lace, but I think it’s as perfect as you can get. The driver was awesome, the pit stop was amazing. The strategy was good to get a rando, and Oscar drove well. I couldn’t be proud of this racing team.
“Everyone is in control. I have a good conversation with Andrea (Stella) during the race. It was very interesting. It was a great Grand Prix.
“Lando’s first rap, we didn’t plan a one -stop strategy. We didn’t know if we could do it, but we reached a point where we could try it. It would be good to come down to the last 5 lap and see a very hard, very clean and happy boy.”
