Mérida is now Mexico’s fastest growing airport.

Mérida’s Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport recorded the fastest growth among Mexico’s major airports at the beginning of this year.

The airport, known by its code MID, handled a total of 357,388 passengers in the most recent reporting period, up 12.9% from 316,481 in the same period the previous year.

This makes Mérida the country’s fastest-growing airport by growth rate, highlighting the Yucatan capital’s continued growth as a tourist and business destination.

Double-digit domestic growth

Most of the increase occurs on domestic flights.

Domestic traffic increased 13.4% year-on-year, from 278,728 to 315,955 passengers. This growth reflects strengthening connectivity between Mérida and major Mexican cities along with increasing demand from domestic leisure travelers.

Mérida is increasingly positioning itself as an alternative to Mexico’s traditional beach hubs, attracting visitors with its colonial architecture, culinary scene, and proximity to cenotes and archaeological sites.

International traffic also increases

The number of international passengers also increased.

MID’s international passengers numbered 41,433, a 9.7% increase from 37,753 the previous year.

Although international travel still accounts for a small portion of overall travel volume compared to domestic travel, the steady increase suggests growing interest from the U.S. and other markets in the Yucatan Peninsula beyond Cancun.

wider yucatan abutment

The airport’s performance reflects broader momentum in Mérida’s tourism profile. The city has seen increased hotel development, expanded air transportation, and growing recognition as a cultural and culinary center.

Total passenger numbers in the period were 357,388, with an overall growth rate of almost 13%, making MID now one of Mexico’s most dynamic air gateways, a sign that demand for Mérida continues to accelerate.
