OpenAI says Codex will come to your phone

Codex goes mobile. The coding tool that OpenAI launched about a year ago has now been integrated into the ChatGPT app, allowing users to remotely monitor and manage their development workflow.

The new feature allows users to view the Codex live environment on any device they are running on. The company announced the changes on Thursday. The update, currently in preview, is now available for all plans on iOS and Android.

“This is more than just the ability to remotely control a single task or pass a new task to a computer,” OpenAI said in a statement. “You can work across all threads, review output, accept commands, change models, or start new ones from your phone.”

Last month, OpenAI gave Codex the ability to run in the background on a desktop environment, allowing the tool to handle a variety of tasks autonomously. Earlier this month, the company also launched a Chrome extension that allows agents to work in a live browser session.

Last February, Anthropic launched a similar feature, Remote Control, that allows users to remotely monitor Claude Code’s work from afar.

The sheer number of feature releases from OpenAI and Anthropic speaks to the fierce competition between them over which agent coding tool will be most widely used. Over the past year, Anthropic’s Claude Code has gained popularity among businesses and technology professionals alike, but both tools remain widely used.
