Super League: Warrington bounce back from cup disappointment, beat Toulouse to move up to joint second place | rugby league news

Warrington moved into joint second place in Super League with a 24-16 win at Toulouse in the Betfred Challenge Cup semi-final.

Sam Burgess’ Wolves missed out on a trip to Wembley with a crushing defeat to Hull KR last Sunday, but produced a superb first half to secure victory in France.

Toby King, Josh Smith and Max Wood gave Wolves an 18-0 lead at the break and Olly Ashall-Bolt responded twice for Toulouse, but King had already added a second to ensure the visitors returned to Warrington with a bonus point win.

Just six minutes were played when King went over before he did his part at the other end to put Burgess’ men ahead after some excellent play from Josh Thewlis.

Wolves had to work hard to regain a foothold in the contest but they made the territory count as Smith put the game away in the 27th minute and Wood scored again to take his first 40 points.

King completed his brace with a fine dummy after 52 minutes to put the visitors 24-0 ahead, but Toulouse finished strong.

Mathieu Jussaume immediately put Toulouse ahead before Ashall-Bolt reduced the deficit further with 21 minutes remaining.

They were under pressure for a while when Mark Snead, who scored eight points, was soon sent to the sin bin for Wolves.

However, Ashall-Bolt’s move back to Toulouse saw them finish 24-16, lifting Warrington into second place on points alongside Leeds, who have played a game more.
