Quebec City is beautiful. While often overlooked in favor of larger destinations like Toronto or Montreal, this is where European explorers first arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. The cultural heart of Quebec (and its capital), the city’s Old Town is one of the best-preserved in all of North America.
As a foodie and history buff, I love Quebec City. It’s a great place to visit in any season, but I think it’s especially beautiful in winter when its old-world charm is covered in snow.
This is a popular vacation spot (for Canadians and visitors alike), so there are plenty of hotels to choose from. Some will be amazing and greatly enrich your experience, while others will not be at all.
To help you make the most of your visit here and to help you choose from the hundreds of hotels listed on our booking website, here is a list of the best hotels in Quebec City.
1. Hotel Artifi Q
Opening in 2022, this new 3-star hotel offers excellent value for its location. It has a unique concept of providing ultra-compact rooms large enough to accommodate a bed that folds down from the wall. The rooms themselves are minimalistically decorated with light tones, plenty of natural light, and a few wooden accents. The bathroom is also small but nice and new with a rainfall shower, free toiletries and a nice mural on the shower wall. Amenities in the rooms are sparse (only a flat-screen TV), but there is a shared kitchen where you can cook a meal or have a coffee, and there is also a garden and terrace to use when the weather is nice.
A simple free breakfast (bread, fruit, meat) is included, but you must prepare it yourself using the shared kitchen. Overall, this is a super efficient hotel that almost feels like a hostel. I think this is a great value choice for budget travelers who want the privacy of a private room and bathroom.
2. Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac
This hotel is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city (if not the country). Opened in 1893, the luxurious chateau is such an important landmark that you can take a guided tour of the hotel even if you don’t actually stay there. Staying at this 5-star hotel will make you feel like you’re living in a historic palace. The spacious lobby is extravagant, with dazzling chandeliers and a winding staircase adding a classic touch to the hotel.
The rooms here are stylish and airy, but feel a bit dated thanks to the drab carpets and room color palette. In-room amenities include a rainfall showerhead, desk, and coffee maker. The award-winning Chateau boasts several gourmet restaurants and bars as well as an indoor pool, hot tub, spa, steam room and fitness room. Breakfast, although pricey, is excellent and there are plenty of options to suit all diets.
If you want timeless luxury, stay here.
3. Hôtel du Jardin – By Les Lofts
This 3-star hotel features spacious loft apartments, making it a great choice for groups or families (or anyone looking for a little more space than a standard hotel room). Contactless check-in and password entry make it feel like you’re staying at an Airbnb. The loft has a minimalist design with light tones and wooden accents, and the walls are lined with giant grayscale animal portraits. The brightly tiled bathroom features a rain shower with great water pressure (something we always appreciate), a desk, a plush bed, a coffee maker, and a flat-screen TV.
Breakfast is not provided, but there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat within walking distance (this neighborhood, Saint Roch, is actually one of the best areas in the city for foodies). Overall, it’s a simple yet comfortable choice for couples or groups who want more space. This trendy neighborhood has a more local feel than the Old Town, so we think it’s especially ideal if you’re planning a long stay in the city.
4. Auberge JA Moijang
Step back to Victorian Quebec at this charming 4-star B&B. This B&B is decorated to resemble when it was first built in the mid-19th century, with floral duvets, colorful wallpaper and exposed brick and timber. We love that you can enjoy a fantastic continental breakfast (fresh croissants included!) in the Victorian drawing room, spend time on the outdoor terrace, and prepare your own meals in the guest kitchen.
The rooms are small with few amenities (for example, there are no TVs in the rooms, but there is a TV in the sitting room with a Roku stick you can use). The cozy rooms have very comfortable beds, antique lamps and period furniture, and most have deep clawfoot bathtubs in the bathrooms (I think the bathrooms are a bit small). It’s not a very spacious hotel, but it more than makes up for it in charm and service. One of the most unique accommodations in the city.
5. Chateau des Tourelles
This cute 3-star inn is just a 10-minute walk from the Old Town. Rooms are simply but tastefully decorated with natural light, wooden floors, colorful walls and exposed brick. All rooms feature a flat-screen TV, desk and very comfortable beds. Some suites have private terraces and jacuzzis if you want to take a dip. No breakfast is provided, but all rooms have Nespresso machines and coffee and tea are available 24/7 in the common areas. Here too, a variety of dining options are within walking distance.
What I especially like is that there is a shared rooftop terrace where you can spend time admiring the panoramic views of the city. Another advantage is that you can reserve a parking space if you have a car. This is another place where check-in is done digitally, which is convenient if you arrive at odd hours.
Quebec City is a wonderful and fun city worth visiting no matter the season. With its vibrant food scene, amazing history and old town, and year-round festival calendar, we think Quebec City punches way above its weight. Choose one of the hotels above for your stay. That way, you’ll have an amazing and relaxing visit to Quebec’s capital!
