It’s easy. You wake up, put on your suit and walk down the stairs right to the sea. Or you can take a dip in your private infinity pool first.
The expansive Caribbean Sea surrounds you in almost every direction, from panoramic views to glass floors beneath your feet and private diving escapes. This is the art of overwater bungalows. And you can find them here.
to Sandals Grande Saint LucianNine overwater bungalows stretch out along a wooden boardwalk right next to the resort’s peninsula, each perched above the turquoise waters with direct views of Rodney Bay and the distant green peaks beyond. This is the only overwater bungalow on St. Lucia and is included in Sandals’ all-inclusive program, which includes butler service, meals and drinks, as well as access to all the facilities of the island’s three Sandals resorts.
Where are you in Saint Lucia?
Sandals Grande St. Lucian is located on a narrow strip of land between the Caribbean Sea and Rodney Bay and offers ocean views on both sides. On the underwater walkway, you face the open Caribbean Sea rather than a sheltered lagoon. Boats moving across the horizon, light moving across the water throughout the day, and the outline of Pigeon Island just beyond.
The bungalows stretch out far enough that the resort feels current, but not immediate. You can walk back to the restaurant, bar and main pool in a matter of minutes, but once inside the villa the experience narrows to the water, the sky and the sound of the sea lapping against the pilings below.
It’s most noticeable at night, when the lights beneath the bungalows glow into the water and you can see fish moving beneath the glass panels.
How Sandals Built the Caribbean’s Aquatic Category
Sandals first introduced the Caribbean’s most famous overwater bungalows almost a decade ago at Sandals Royal Caribbean, and they’ve taken it to the next level with Sandals St Vincent and the Grenadines resort (also very good). But this St. Lucia bungalow is truly amazing because it’s off the beaten track.
What makes these bungalows different?
Although there are now overwater villas elsewhere in the Caribbean, there is only one set on St. Lucia, and it is one of the first villas in the region. They are designed to bring South Pacific concepts to a Caribbean setting without losing the island’s identity.
Each bungalow’s living area features glass floor panels, which provide more than just a visual detail. You end up just stopping there, mindlessly looking down at the water to see what’s moving beneath you. It becomes part of how you use the room.
Outside, there is a private deck with an underwater hammock suspended between the edges, loungers and a small infinity plunge pool with direct views of the ocean. The ladder on the deck drops right into the water, so you can swim whenever you want without leaving your villa.
The interior design is clean and functional. There is a king-size bed facing the view, a bathtub with a direct view of the water, and a bathroom that opens towards the same horizon through sliding glass panels.
Everything is facing outward.
Overwater Honeymoon Butler Bungalow
This is the more compact of the two categories, but its footprint still feels spacious. The Honeymoon Butler Bungalow is designed for two people who desire privacy with direct access to the water without any internal separation.
As soon as you go inside, you can see the sea through the glass back wall. The bed is located in the center of the room, facing the view, with a glass floor panel directly in front of it. There is a seating area on one side. The other bathroom with a bathtub is also positioned so that it can be seen from the same perspective.
The outdoor deck becomes the anchor. You’ll spend most of your time moving between hammocks, loungers, and plunge pools. The ladder into the water is located on the side for easy access but not in the main view.
This category is perfect if you want a simple underwater experience without any additional layers. It’s direct. When you step outside, you are already where you want to be.
If you’re planning a honeymoon, this option will allow you to keep everything close and quarantined. There is no need for a separate room or extended living room. The emphasis is on the water and you two.
Overwater Private Island Butler Villa with Infinity Pool
The Private Island Butler Villa offers more interior space and a slightly different flow. While the core elements are still the same – glass floors, outdoor hammocks and direct access to the ocean – the layout provides more defined zones.
Inside, there’s a larger living area, which makes a difference if you plan on spending time in the villa beyond sleeping and venturing out onto the deck. The bedrooms still face the water, but the added interior space creates a clearer distinction between rest and relaxation.
The outdoor deck is also larger, featuring a larger infinity pool that feels more like a true swimming option than a water bath. You can stay in the pool longer without feeling stuffy, especially in the middle of the day when the sun is at its strongest.
This category is perfect for couples who want an aquatic environment but are looking forward to an extended stay or simply spending a lot of time in the villa itself at a different pace. It’s still intimate, but there’s more room to move.
Deciding between the two will come down to how you plan to use the space. If you spend most of your time in the water or out on deck, a honeymoon bungalow provides everything you need. If you want a more complete indoor/outdoor balance, private island villas offer that flexibility.
How Butler Service is Right for You
All of the overwater bungalows here include butler service, giving you more of an experience than you might expect. No need to wait in line or adjust your reservation yourself. Your butler can handle dining reservations, prepare in-villa meals, and set up details such as breakfast delivered to the deck or a private dinner timed for sunset.
You can rely on it as much or as little as you want. Some couples use their services for almost everything and rarely leave their bungalows except for swimming or walking. Others use it selectively, treating it as support rather than structure.
We recommend using it early in your stay to set the mood. Let us know how you’d like to spend your time – a quiet morning in your bungalow, an afternoon exploring the resort, or an evening at one of our many restaurants – and we’ll tailor it accordingly.
Tier that includes everything
Sandals Grande St. All of Lucian’s services include meals, drinks, water sports and transfers between Sandals hotels on the island. This is even more important when staying on the water as it eliminates the friction in deciding whether or not to leave the villa.
You can stay in place and still get the full experience.
You can bring your own meals or walk back along the promenade and choose from one of the many restaurants on site. Additionally, if you want to change the scene, Sandals Halcyon Beach and Sandals Regency La Toc are available, adding more dining options and settings.
If you like variety but don’t want to plan every step, this setup keeps things simple. You can move between the quiet of your bungalow and the more social atmosphere of the resort without having to move hotels or logistics.
There are 12 different dining options here, with plenty to choose from, from Italian to jerk to authentic crepes.
How to Use Your Time Here
A schedule isn’t necessary, but a loose rhythm helps.
Start with water. Early in your stay, you can enjoy a relaxing swim outside your bungalow using the ladder on the deck. The water is generally calm, and once you play in it, it becomes second nature.
Use your plunge pool differently than expected. It’s not just for cooling down. This works well in the late afternoon as the sun begins to set and the light changes over the water. You can stay longer and take in the horizon without leaving your villa.
Return to the main resort at least once each day. Even if you plan to spend most of your time on the water, you’ll feel prepared when you return to the rest of the property. It keeps the bungalow experience from feeling too closed off.
Enjoy butler service for at least one meal within your villa. Having breakfast on the deck or preparing dinner al fresco will change your experience of the space.
Why couples choose this setting
This setting attracts, but is not limited to, honeymooners. The appeal is simple. It’s an enclosed environment with privacy, direct access to water, and not much coordination required.
Whether you’re celebrating something specific, such as a honeymoon or anniversary, overwater bungalows provide a clear sense of occasion. Settings does most of the work. You don’t need to add layers to create a distinct look.
If you’re simply looking for a couple’s escape, the same factors still apply. You can control how much you participate in the resort and how much you stay in your own space.
There is a balance here that is hard to find elsewhere on the island. There are many hillside resorts in St. Lucia with great views, but none are located right on the water. Sandals’ service, food and amenities ensure you experience all the romance you expect from a St. Lucia vacation. And the water is all yours.
How to get there and what to expect
Arrival is via Hewanorra International Airport on the southern tip of the island, with the resort in the north about a 90-minute drive away. Transport is included via Sandals and offers a full cross-section of the island from the coastal road to inland.
Once you arrive, the transition is quick. Check-in is handled efficiently and you are escorted directly to your bungalow once your butler has already introduced himself and shown you around the space.
I think my first impression was the view from the deck. Once you get out there, the water becomes a reference point for everything that follows.
conclusion
Sandals Grande St. Lucian’s overwater bungalows offer a special kind of stay: an enclosed environment with direct access to the ocean, full-service support, and the ability to choose how much you can engage outside of the villa.
There are two clear options: Overwater Honeymoon Butler Bungalows are built around the essentials of the experience, keeping everything close and focused. Overwater Private Island Butler Villas offer a more spacious indoor-outdoor setting, adding more space and flexibility.
Both take you out on the water in an area of Saint Lucia that you can’t do anywhere else.
When you wake up and go outside, the sea is already there.
Sandals Grande St Lucian Price
For an overwater honeymoon butler bungalow, prices start at $2,022 per person per night. This is still competitive with similarly styled floating options on the other side of the world, such as Bora Bora (not to mention significantly improved flight times and fares).
Overwater Butler Villas with infinity pools cost up to $2,532 per person per night. I would say it’s worth the luxury. A private infinity pool in an overwater bungalow is, at least in my opinion, the best travel amenity you’ll find anywhere.
