Tottenham manager Thomas Frank remained defiant despite loud boos from fans chanting ‘you’ll be sacked in the morning’ following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by West Ham.
Callum Wilson’s last-gasp winner sparked toxic scenes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the South Stand called on the Dane to play after a run of eight defeats in 14 games.
Speaking about the boos and chants at the post-match press conference, Frank said: “Of course I would have had a better time. I understand that. I’m the one in charge so the blame falls on me. That’s fair and in that sense it doesn’t matter.”
“As long as they support their players and are committed to supporting them and moving them forward, we will continue to move forward.”
Frank struck a confident tone in his post-match press conference, likening his task to replacing a “super tank” with Spurs sitting 14th in the standings, 10 points above the drop zone.
The Dane has shown the likes of a man who has the support of the Spurs hierarchy in just a week, as he has dropped a new midfielder in Conor Gallagher and a new first-team assistant coach, John Heitinga.
But neither side got the result they wanted on Saturday as Tottenham were embarrassed by their relegation-threatened London rivals.
Prior to kick-off, Tottenham CEO Vinay Venkatesham released an open letter on the matchday program that addressed several issues, including the relationship between the club and its fans and player trades.
“I looked at the letter and I found six or eight positive things in it that weren’t negative,” Frank said.
“What I took away from that letter is that the club, with Vinai at the head, the management is working together and knows that this is a big transition step and a super tank. We are moving in the right direction.
“And some shows have a lot of good signs behind the scenes as well.
“Of course, in football if you lose to one of your rivals in the last minute, it will be very emotional and there will be noise.
“And we’ve got to stay away from the noise, keep our heads down, keep walking, and keep doing the right thing.”
Frank faced questions about team information being leaked before kick-off, but insisted he was not worried about the issue.
Frank: We’re very close to something good.
West Ham ended a 10-match winless run and became the second Premier League side to secure a win against Spurs this month after Bournemouth won 3-2 to end an 11-match winless run.
Last Saturday’s FA Cup third round defeat at home to Aston Villa marked a third successive defeat for Frank.
But Frank believes his side are “close to something very good” despite their winless start to 2026.
When asked why he needed to spend more time, Frank said: “We know that if we don’t win enough, we don’t get enough support from the fans.
“But when we win, when we start winning again, that will change. We will, there’s no doubt about it. And I think you just have to look at the performance.
“Let’s say Bournemouth and Villa and this game here. If the players stopped running or didn’t do anything or didn’t work hard and we weren’t the closest team to winning, you might say ‘okay’, but I think the team is working very hard.
“And I still think we’re getting closer to something very good than further away, and I know that sounds a little strange.
He added, “I can sit here and promise you that I’m giving it my all every day.”
“I feel the trust of everyone. There is only one way: to keep going.”
That trust will now be tested to its limits.
Sherwood pinpoints the one thing that saves Frank.
Sky Sports’ Tim Sherwood has dubbed the match between Spurs and West Ham ‘El Sacchico’, but the former Spurs midfielder believes the only way to save Frank is if there is a shortage of candidates to replace him.
He told Football Saturday after the defeat: “It doesn’t look good.
“Spurs cannot win at home and have lost to local rivals who appear to be bottom of the Premier League.
“Frank is feeling the pressure, but the only way to save his job is if someone comes in.
“They won a trophy last year and finished 17th. They won’t win a trophy this year. They missed out on both cups and are heading towards the bottom of the league.”
“They are still in the Champions League but there is little chance of them winning it. Where do Spurs go from here?”
Romero: ‘This is a disaster for us’
Another home game awaits Frank as Tottenham host Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday and a must-win away game against relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League.
If Tottenham lose at Turf Moor and West Ham win, Tottenham will be seven points higher than the point they dropped. If they haven’t already, alarm bells will sound.
Spurs captain Christian Romero, who scored the equalizer against West Ham, admitted Tottenham have been miserable this season, having won just two of their 11 home league games.
he said sky sports: “We need to stay together, work hard and be back on the training ground tomorrow. This moment is a disaster for us.
“Tomorrow we will train quietly and train hard again, then we have another big game in the middle of the week.
“This moment is a disaster for us. We have had good times and bad times. We have to work hard and go again.”
“This is a difficult moment for us. We are not the best on the pitch.”
