What is the new relegation rules?
The FA has expanded to 14 teams since the 2026/27 season and has been approved by the Women’s Super League.
The current league format has seen a team relegated from the top class of women’s football, but now the two teams will be relegated and promoted every two teams.
In order to reach 14 teams for the 2026/27 campaign, the top two teams in the second tier, the Women’s Super League 2, are automatically promoted to the WSL.

The last 14th place is determined by relegation playoffs at the end of the season between the 12th and Women’s Super League 2 in the WSL.
