American Airlines brings Starlink Wi-Fi to more than 500 planes

American Airlines is looking to make flying even more connected.

The Fort Worth-based airline announced Tuesday that it will install Starlink, Elon Musk’s SpaceX’s high-speed satellite internet service, on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft, with rollouts scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

This comes after another major airline, United, has already begun the process of rolling out Starlink to its fleet.

This is a groundbreaking change for American Airlines and will be felt significantly throughout its Caribbean network, where the airline’s Airbus narrowbody aircraft handles the majority of flights to destinations from Jamaica to St. Maarten to Aruba.

Using thousands of low-Earth orbit satellites, Starlink is widely recognized as the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky, capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calling, and real-time collaboration tools. This is the type of connection travelers expect from home, but it rarely reaches 35,000 feet.

“As a premium global airline, we continually seek world-class partners like Starlink to give our customers what they need and want,” Heather Garboden, American Airlines’ chief customer officer, said in a statement. “The addition of Starlink solidifies American as the leading airline for keeping passengers connected during their flights.”

What it means for Caribbean travelers

The upgrade will essentially cover American’s domestic and short-haul international routes, including all Caribbean flights. The airline’s Airbus A319, A320 and A321 jets, along with its new A321XLR and A321neo deliveries, are workhorses on routes to the islands from hubs such as Miami, Charlotte and New York.

This means travelers heading to the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and more can stream, scroll, and work as if they were on land.

According to American, Starlink’s Aero Terminal can support up to 1 Gbps per antenna. This is multigigabit connectivity, a huge leap forward over the existing in-flight Wi-Fi that most airplanes find frustrating.

“American is committed to enhancing every aspect of our customers’ travel journey. This means keeping our customers connected and comfortable with the assurance that they don’t have to download documents before their flight or worry about delays,” added Garboden. “We’re excited to deliver a home-quality Wi-Fi experience in a narrow body so our customers can work, game, stream, and scroll endlessly.”

Sky’s growth trend

As satellite networks are rapidly becoming the standard for airline Wi-Fi, American joins a growing number of major airlines choosing Starlink for inflight connectivity.

“We are proud to bring Starlink to American Airlines, providing fast, reliable internet to our passengers and crew,” said Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX. “Whether you’re traveling for vacation or business, Starlink provides a fully connected experience from gate to gate, making every flight more seamless and enjoyable.”

The launch comes as American Airlines celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026. It’s a milestone the world’s largest airline is celebrating with a series of customer experience upgrades.

For travelers heading to the Caribbean, the message is simple: By 2027, flights to the islands will become much more productive. Or even more fun, if you prefer.
